Using Opserver to Share User Files

*NOTE* - These instructions assume the user's computer is properly configured and that the network connection is working. Summary From inside the Lab, Macintosh and Windows users can access opserver as they would any other file server. All users, including Unix/Linux users, can use ftp and sftp to upload and download files, and a web browser to download files. From outside the Lab, all users can use sftp (if installed) to upload and download files or a web browser to download files.
  1. Macintosh Users
    • Inside the Lab:
        • Mac OS 7/8/9 select Chooser under the Apple Menu, click on the AppleShare icon, click the button 'Server IP Address' and type 'opserver.magnet.fsu.edu' in the address field.
        • Mac OS X select 'Connect to Server'(CMD-K) under the Go Menu in Finder and type 'afp://opserver.magnet.fsu.edu' in the address field.
      • Select 'Guest' then click 'Connect'.
      • Select the volume 'guest', then double-click the 'guest' icon on the desktop once connected.
      • Double-click 'Sites' and copy or read your files there.
    • Outside the Lab:
      For uploading or downloading use MacSFTP (shareware for Mac OS 8/9/X,) or follow the instructions below for Unix/Linux users (Mac OS X only). For downloading only see 'Web Browser Access' below.
  2. Windows Users
    • Inside the Lab:
      • Right-click on 'Network Neighborhood'
        • Windows 95/98/NT: select 'Find Computer'
        • Windows 2000/XP: right-click on 'My Network Places' and select 'Search for Computers'.
      • In the Computer Name field type 'opserver.magnet.fsu.edu'
      • click 'Find' or 'Search Now'.
      • When prompted for a user name and password, type in 'guest' and 'maglab'.
      • Once connected, double-click the folder 'Users', then the folder 'guest'
      • Double-click 'Sites' and copy or read your files there.
    • Outside the Lab:
      For uploading or downloading use the copy file feature of SSH (free to educational institutions) or some other sftp client. For downloading only see 'Web Browser Access' below.
  3. Unix/Linux Users
    • Open a console, terminal or shell window
    • type 'ftp opserver.magnet.fsu.edu' (inside the Lab only) or 'sftp guest@opserver.magnet.fsu.edu'
    • use 'guest' as the user name and 'maglab' as the password whe prompted
    • At the prompt, type 'cd /Sites', then use 'put' or 'get' to upload or download files.
  4. Web Browser Access
    Open your web browser to http://opserver.magnet.fsu.edu/~guest/ and click on the files you want to download.
