The silicon cantilever beam method of force magnetometry can be used in any DC resistive or superconducting magnet to measure the torque on an anisotropic sample in an isotropic field or an isotropic sample in an anisotropic field. The balance can measure forces in the range from 10-4 to 2X10-2 dyne*cm without the nulling mode and has been extended to 10-1 in nulling mode. It can resolve 10-7 emu (10-10 J/T) in a field gradient of 0.1 T/cm. It can resolve 10-9 emu of torque at 20 T. The temperature range of the cantilever beam method is from 20 mK to 300 K.
A vibrating sample magnetometer may be used in the 20 T superconducting magnet in Los Alamos, and one will be purchased for use at the NHMFL at Tallahassee for hysteresis measurements and samples such as pressure cells that are inappropriate for the cantilever beam method.
Apparatus for measuring AC susceptibility in samples at temperatures from 0.5 K to 300 K is available.
