DC Resistive Magnets

DC power supply:

The power supply is made up of four independent rectifiers with passive and active filter/regulators. The units can be used separately or run in parallel to provide higher currents to single magnets. The table shows the modes for maximum power operation (all four power supplies in a single magnet).
Nominal rating 24 MW 32 MW 40 MW
Voltage 400 V 500 V 500 V
Current 17 kA 17 kA 20 kA
Maximum rating with four supplies in parallel 27.2 MW 34 MW 40 MW
Maximum operating time indefinite 12 hours 1 hour

Considerable effort has gone into limiting ripple and noise in the magnets by tuning and controlling internal noise in the active filter/regulators and by designing the magnet cooling water system and magnet housings for minimum vibration. The results so far are as follows:

Ripple and noise (2-2500 Hz): <10 ppm
Instability, (0-2 Hz): <100 ppm
Repeatability error, including ripple: <100 ppm
Resolution between adjacent steps of current set point: = 10 ppm

The homogeneity of the fields in the general purpose magnets is 0.02 % to 0.05 % over a 10 mm diameter sample volume. A specially designed 24.5 T magnet and specially compensated sample holders have been installed for magnetic resonance measurements at high fields.

Each magnet is surrounded by a platform at a height that allows the user to reach the sample holder in the top of the cryostat in the magnet without excessive reaching or bending. The platform is wide and strong enough to support equipment as well as users walking on it. Most access is from the top, but access from below is possible.

(1) Higher homogeneity magnet (10 ppm/cm unshimmed)

(2) Replacement for 20 T, 50mm magnets

(3) Magnet with larger bore to allow shim, modulation, and gradient coils to be wound on the bore tube.
